En 2022, the main infrastructure of the Berbera corridor will be completed, offering the possibility for Somaliland, an autonomous region of Somalia, located east of Djibouti, to become the main gateway for importing goods into Ethiopia and in Central Africa.
On February 28, 2019, Somaliland and Ethiopia launched the work of the 4-lane highway in front of the port connecting the port of Berbera to Hargeisa, the largest city in the region, and Torgochale in Ethiopia. This infrastructure will replace the tarmac in use until now. This $ 400 million investment, the second largest after the extension of the port of Berbera by the UAE giant DP World, is largely funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, a UAE government fund supporting projects promoting economic growth in developing countries. Somaliland, Ethiopia, and the Emirates while awaiting an enhancement of the territory of Somaliland and a substantial increase in the traffic of goods to and from Ethiopia and the countries of Central Africa without access to the maritime traffic. Trade between Somaliland and Ethiopia is estimated at $ 800 million annually (source Shabel Media Network). Somaliland President Muse Bihi Adbi said at the ceremony: "This project will bring economic stability and employment opportunities for our young people".
